Here is President Obama speaking in Poland recently together with my comments.
We stand together because we believe that people and nations have the right to determine their own destiny – that includes the people of Ukraine.
Well. They did. They voted for President Yanukovych. He opted to align Ukraine with Russia. So you sent your senior officials to Kiev to support the opposition. People are supported to “determine their ow density” when it aligns with US economic interests. Otherwise (as in the East of Ukraine) they are killed.
Our free nations will stand united so that further Russian provocations will only mean more isolation and costs for Russia.
What Russian provocations? He is living in phantasy land. The US has not provided evidence that Russia is orchestrating anything in Eastern Ukraine. The Russian position on that was made clear by Sergei Lavrov some time ago. They do not feel they can use their influence to ask the militants to dis-arm while Kiev is conducting a military operation in the East. The narrative line about Russian provocations is smoke-screen to cover US backing for the coup in Kiev.
Because after investing so much blood and treasure to bring Europe together, we refuse to allow the dark tactics of the 20th century to define the 21st.
Whose “dark tactics”? It was the EU/US who fostered the unconstitutional coup in Kiev. Unanswered questions remain about who organised the massacre in Maidan squar though a report from the new government has said it wasn’t the special police. How about the massacre at the Trade Union building in Odessa? Whose “dark tactics” was that? Kiev suggests that they blew themsleves up. When Kiev bombed the council building in Lugansk they said the people blew themselves up. The State Department said they were still investigating. The OSCE said it looked like Kiev to them.
The days of empires and spheres of influence are over.
Ha. Ha. What was the EU doing when it forced Ukraine to choose between the EU and Russia? What was the US doing when it sent people to support the coup? What is Obama doing when he pals up with the “new government” endorsing everything they do and supplying them with military aid? What is NATO doing flooding the area with battleships, fighter jets and troops to “re-assure the allies”?
Bigger nations must not be allowed to bully the small, or impose their will at the barrel of a gun or with masked men taking over buildings
Ha. Ha. But the US had no problems a few weeks ago when their stooges were doing just this all over Western Ukraine.
And the stroke of a pen can never legitimize the theft of a neighbor’s land. So we will never accept Russia’s occupation of Crimea or its violations of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
No mention of a referendum. So much for “people and nations have the right to determine their own destiny”.
The narrative line from the US is pure phantasy. While using every ruthless tactic in the book to bring Ukraine into their sphere of influence they accuse Russia of using “dark tactics” to extend their sphere of influence. The problem is that, as Frank Furedi, has pointed out in a recent excellent article they actually believe their own narrative. The key here is something to do with “free”. As long as they believe that they are extending the “free world” they just don’t see their own actions as what they are: empire building, extending spheres of interest etc. This is a philosophy of pure power. The “end of history” is when everyone is subsumed by US capitalism (i.e. is “free”). Anything contrary to this is an error which must be corrected. The absolute and exclusive worth of the project they are engaged in is so blindingly obvious to them that they can’t even see any other point of view.
Update 6 June
Here is a case in point.
Jen Psaki, the State Department spokesperson has “tweeted”:
Despite the Russian propaganda machine suggesting otherwise..I am still here as is a strong, democratic Ukraine (RT)
(Apparently she thought RT was spreading rumours of her demise).
A Gallup poll conducted in Ukraine before the recent elections shows just how divided the country is. Far fewer people in the East of Ukraine support joining the EU and NATO. The figures are decisive. For example in the Western region 84% support joining the EU compared with 19% in the East. (See the document for the figures for all regions). A Gallup poll commissioned by a US propaganda station (Voice of America) cannot be dismissed as the work of “terrorists”. Gallup polls are not conducted “at gunpoint”. It is clear therefore that Ukraine really is divided. That the East really is not being represented by the policies of the “new government”.
It is clear that Ms Psaki’s idea of a “strong democracy” includes sending fighter jets and APCs against dissenting regions of your country.
They really believe it seems that just using the words “strong democracy” means that there is a “strong democracy”. The narrative is everything. They are, as Sergei Lavrov noted, “detached from reality”.
