Starmer aims to destroy peace and start a war in Europe

It is simply hard to grasp the profound stupidity of these people. “Totally delusional” is putting it mildly. Rushing to show the world that Britain is a force to be reckoned with Starmer’s kleptocratic Chancellor has just stolen $2.2 billion of interest from hijacked Russian funds [1], (which will have to be repaid sometime), to give to Ukraine to build weapons. Not content with that Starmer has announced what appears to be another loan (against UK funds) to pay for 5000 “air defence missiles”. According to the Guardian Starmer has said any deal “will have to involve Russia”. What planet is he on? Does he think he is in the driving street and dictating terms? Does he think that Russia has lost? Apparently so. Who is briefing him? Even if he just read nothing but the Guardian, he would be able to piece together that Ukraine is losing. Ukraine has a critical manpower shortage and are steadily losing ground to a much larger army. In full, the Guardian reports: “Starmer says that any final deal “will have to involve Russia”, but it [Russia] should not dictate the guarantees that can be offered to Ukraine given the history of Russian breaches in the past. “Russian breaches in the past?” Does he really not know that Merkel claimed the biggest breach of all; that she signed Minsk in bad faith only for the purposes of giving Ukraine time to arm? Is he not aware that the breaches of the ceasefire were, according to the OSCE reporting mission, committed by both sides? What “history of Russian breaches”? Is he just repeating a Zelensky talking point? Starmer is also quoted:

I do not want conflict in Ukraine, in Europe, and certainly not in the United Kingdom. I want stability in the United Kingdom.

The way to ensure that stability is to ensure that we are able to defend a deal in Ukraine, because the one thing our history tells us is that if there is conflict in Europe, it will wash up on our shores. [2]

And: “Starmer says “a number of countries” indicates they were willing to join the coalition of willing, but says it is up to them to announce that”.

He is so stupid that he does not realise that were his plans to come to fruition, a European army in Ukraine enforcing some kind of ceasefire against Russia, that a) Kiev would almost certainly immediately use that army to fight Russia and b) either way it would be attacked by Russia and hey presto Starmer would have his European war.

This is a textbook example of how countries blunder into wars; taking threatening measures designed to ‘avoid a war’ they act in such a way that their opponent has no alternative but to engage them.

Slightly worryingly Starmer was surrounded by the heads of states of several European countries, e.g. Poland, Germany and France. (Somewhat, amusingly the British forgot to invite Latvia, Lithuanian and Estonia and Starmer had to hop on a NATO secure comms call and apologise to them for not inviting them). [3]

As per my previous post, the saving news is that this madness will at some point, collide with reality; Russia will decline to sign any kind of agreement which allows this Euro-Ukrainian army and that will be the end of it. At that point, they will have to decide to abandon the idea or insert the troops under fire, which will be interesting. However; all these loans and grants for more weapons means that Kiev will be able to fight on a bit longer. More Ukrainians will die. More ground will be lost. Russia will become angrier and their terms will become harsher, possibly up to the point of the total destruction of Ukraine. Do these people think beyond the group photo and the tomorrow’s headlines? Apparently, really, not.

If Starmer were successful in this then war will indeed wash up on his shores.””

Update – dreams

Today’s Guardian headline is: “Prime minister confirms UK and France will lead a ‘coalition of the willing’ to help end the war with Russia”. I just giggled.

As per the above, there is going to be no “coalition of the willing” and such a collation, far from “helping to end the war”, were it ever to come to fruition would prolong and expand the war. Do they understand nothing at all? Given that one of Russia’s key demands is an end to the militarisation of Ukraine and, to borrow John Mearsheimer’s phrase, its being turned into a “Western bulwark on Russia’s borders”, why is Russia going to accept a negotiated solution which involves just this?? The former German leader is also quoted in the press as saying that the solution is that Ukraine must have a “strong army”. The same problem. These people seem to think that they are the victors and they are the ones who can dictate terms.

A few weeks ago Zelensky talked about a European army: “Our army alone is not enough, we need your support”. [4] The next day he was talking about a “peacekeeping” force. It is clear that for Kiev there is no distinction. At the heart of European (and previous US) policy on Ukraine is a huge fudge (обман). “We will support Ukraine eternally” – but, “we cannot provoke Russia”. This fudge only worked as long as they maintained the pretence that Ukraine really could win on this basis (limited supply of weapons). The direct result of this fudge was the endless prolongation of the war. It continued, but Kiev could never win. This fudge continues with the current policy. In the new US set context of a negotiated end to the war they are still trying to sound like they “support Ukraine”; which they now plan to do by arming Ukraine and supporting it with a European army, so it, and they, can look tough in defeat. This is so weak. It is like the clear loser in a wrestling match standing there flexing his muscles rather than shaking hands and moving on. But, even this isn’t going to work. At some point they are going to have to deal with reality. The choice cannot be put off forever. Either they have to accept Russia’s demands or that Russia has manged to impose its demands by force, or they have to go to war with Russia. My guess, and hope, obviously, is that when their dreams finally collide with reality they will choose the former.

Update 2 – more dreams

This is beyond giggling. The totally absurd Ursula von der Leyen (head of the EU Commission – secretariat) apparently said: “It’s basically about turning Ukraine into a steel porcupine that is indigestible for any invader”. (Actually this idea, about a ceasefire and arming Ukraine to the hilt to ‘deter’ Russia, is not new. It’s been around for many months). Again; no. Russia is not interested in porcupines on their border. That’s why they started military operations. Which part of that is hard to grasp?

There is a serious aspect to this. If the EU is threatening to insert a Euro-Ukraine army into Ukraine the moment any potential ceasefire is agreed then that will have the effect of blocking the ceasefire. Perhaps I am underestimating these people? Perhaps they understand that their Euro-Ukraine army has no chance of becoming reality, but, they are deliberately wielding the threat of it in order to sabotage the US led peace talks?

It seems that European leaders are doubling down on their folly and tying the fate of Europe, and the UK, to Ukraine. Why they would want to risk a European war for the sake of a corrupt, undemocratic, impoverished, run by nationalists, country on the edge of Europe, (where a large percentage of the population doesn’t want to join the EU anyway), is not clear to me. It would be the stuff of comedies if it didn’t have so much blood attached to it.

And then, we can do all this all over again with Georgia? At least the Trump administration seems to have grasped that a new ‘security architecture’ is needed for Europe. Europe itself has not caught up yet. They have no strategic thinking beyond “we must bash Russia”.
