Covering up your mad Uncle’s pathologies

Imagine your mad Uncle is a paedophile. At a party he blurts out something like “I watched a great video last night about two ten-year olds going at it with gusto” [1] Do you, a) gasp, admit what he said and criticise it, while apologizing or do you b) cover it up, even though you know that this means his crimes will continue?

Consider this in the Guardian:

Trump said earlier that the US Navy would start blockading the Hormuz strait and also prohibit every vessel in international waters that had paid a toll to Iran. [2]

What did Trump actually say?

I have also instructed our navy to to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran [3]

Not just the meaningless “prohibit’. How are we to understand this? I think, exactly as I suggest; they are instinctively covering up for Trump’s crimes. (Were this to happen it would be piracy pure and simple). Why? So the crimes can continue.
